Importance of PIQ form in SSB. Interview as a technique is designed to gain information about a person.   Almost all professions and occupations which deal with human beings make use of it. In its broadest sense “Interview” may be defined as “a personal meeting and conversation between two or more persons with an aim of getting information about the person or persons taking part in the meeting “.

In the Services Selection Board, Patterned or Evaluation Interview Technique is employed to evaluate a candidate’s potential or OLQ within the constraints of time. In this Technique, a pre-planned pattern of questions is used by the interviewer to obtain inputs from the candidate, which assists him to assess and interpret relevant personality traits in terms of Officer Like Qualities (OLQ).

The Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) contains certain basic information regarding the candidate’s qualifications, achievements and family background, etc. A candidate is required to fill up two copies of the same after clearing the Screening Test. The PIQ is the first impression a candidate creates with the IO and Psychologist. A form which is hurriedly written or has too many cuttings and over writings or gives incomplete information gives an impression of carelessness. Therefore it is important that candidates fill up the form well.

The PIQ gives a basic background information about a candidate. However it will not be able to provide any insight regarding the candidates’ attitude towards life and work, whether they are likely to get along with people, whether they can adapt themselves to the service environment, their problem areas, social activities and leadership potential etc.

The IO plans his questions during the evaluation interview with a focus to bring out these aspects. Candidates must give the information carefully in the PIQ and be prepared to logically share their experiences and learnings of their participation in all activities mentioned by them in the PIQ during the Interview.
