Meet Lt. Harpreet Singh, Sword Of Honour At OTA Chennai POP

Harpreet Singh, was awarded the ‘Sword of Honour’ at the passing-out parade of the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, on Saturday 07 March 2020. He will be joining an old cavalry regiment – Scinde Horse – in the rank of Lieutenant.

Harpreet also won the gold medal for passing out first in the overall order of merit of the passing-out course. The parade was reviewed by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh.

Harpreet had joined AFPI in 2011 and completed his training in 2013. He excelled in outdoor activities and was the cross-country champion twice. He appeared for the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examination but was not successful in his first attempt. Undeterred, he continued to work hard to achieve his goal of earning a commission in the armed forces. He joined OTA, Chennai, as part of the 45th NCC course in April last year, standing first in the all-India merit list.

At the OTA, he excelled in all aspects of training and was appointed academy cadet adjutant, the senior-most cadet appointment responsible for discipline at the academy. His sustained hard work and determination paid off as he stood first among his course-mates at the time of commissioning.

Harpreet’s father is Risaldar Sukh Ram, a retired Junior Commissioned Officer from a famous cavalry regiment, Hodson’s Horse. Sukh Ram was an outstanding command-level boxer while in service. His mother, Jaswinder Kaur, is a homemaker. He has an elder brother, who is in Canada. They belong to Abiana Khurd village in Rupnagar district of Punjab.

Harpreet studied in various schools in Army cantonments, where his father was posted. He did his Class X from Army School, Lalgarh Jattan (Rajasthan) and after joining AFPI, he studied in Shemrock Senior School, Mohali. Maharaja Ranjit Singh AFPI has so far sent 137 cadets from the first seven batches to NDA and other service academies.
