The Indian Army is undergoing a significant transformation to adapt to the demands of modern warfare. At the heart of this shift is the creation of Bhairav Battalions, a specialised light combat forces designed to bridge the gap between conventional infantry and elite special forces. With plans to operationalise 25 battalions within six months, Bhairav units are rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about additions to India’s defence structure.
What Are Bhairav Battalions?
Bhairav Battalions are specialised light combat battalions of the Indian Army created to enhance strike capabilities at the tactical level. They are built to be lean, mobile, and highly lethal which will be capable of executing rapid cross-border operations, reconnaissance, and targeted disruption missions.
Unlike traditional infantry units that may number 800 or more troops, each Bhairav Battalion is smaller, with approximately 250 personnel drawn from infantry and supporting arms such as artillery, signals, and air defence. This mix enables flexibility and multi-domain operational ability without diverting elite Special Forces from strategic missions.
The name Bhairav draws inspiration from the fierce form of Lord Shiva in Indian tradition, symbolising strength, fearlessness, and aggressive combat spirit.
Why Are These Battalions Being Raised?
The concept behind Bhairav Battalions is rooted in the evolving nature of warfare:
1. Bridging Capability Gaps
They fill a capability gap between regular infantry and elite Para-Special Forces. Standard infantry may lack the specialised training for rapid strike missions, while Special Forces are often reserved for high-priority strategic tasks. Bhairav units provide a flexible, intermediate force that can undertake deep strikes, raids, and high-impact operations.
2. Quick, High-Impact Border Response
Positioned to respond quickly in high-altitude and border theatres such as the Northern and Western commands, these battalions boost readiness for contingencies along the China and Pakistan borders.
3. Modernisation and Force Transformation
Their creation is part of a broader infantry modernisation drive, which also includes equipping units with new drone platoons and upgraded weapons, enhancing situational awareness and battlefield lethality.

Structure & Operational Role:
Each Bhairav Battalion is a compact and highly specialised unit with a strength of around 250 personnel, making it much smaller and more agile than a conventional infantry battalion. The soldiers are drawn from infantry and supporting arms, following a combined-arms structure that integrates elements of artillery, signals, and other support units to ensure operational flexibility. Personnel undergo initial training at their respective regimental centres, after which they receive advanced and specialised training through attachments with elite forces, sharpening their skills for high-risk missions.
Operationally, Bhairav Battalions are tasked with executing cross-border strikes, reconnaissance and deep-penetration operations, and the disruption of enemy logistics and communication networks. They also play a crucial role in supporting Special Forces by handling tactical-level missions, allowing elite units to focus on strategic objectives.
Deployment and Timeline:
The Indian Army is rapidly raising Bhairav Battalions, with a plan to make 25 such units operational within six months of the announcement. By early 2026, around 15 battalions have already been formed and deployed across different Army commands. These units have been positioned in key areas, including high-altitude northern regions and western desert sectors, where quick and specialised response is crucial.
Many of the initial Bhairav Battalions have been placed under formations such as 14, 15, and 16 Corps of the Northern Command, as well as in hill and desert sectors, ensuring strong and flexible combat readiness along sensitive borders.
