How To Become Indian Army officer

Becoming an officer in the Indian Army after 12th is possible if you choose the right entry and prepare step by step. You don’t need to wait till graduation. Here are the main ways to join the Indian Army as an officer after 12th.

National Defence Academy (NDA & NA) Entry

After 12th, the National Defence Academy (NDA) is the most popular way to become an Indian Army officer. Male and female candidates from any stream that is, Science, Arts, or Commerce can apply for the Army wing. The candidate must be unmarried and between 16.5 to 19.5 years of age. Selection happens through a written exam conducted by UPSC, followed by a five-day SSB interview and a medical test. After clearing all stages, selected candidates undergo three years of training at NDA, Khadakwasla, and one year at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, after which they are commissioned as Lieutenants in the Indian Army.

Technical Entry Scheme (TES) Entry

Another important entry is the Technical Entry Scheme (TES), which is meant for male candidates who have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 12th class. Candidates should have at least 60% marks and be between 16.5 to 19.5 years old. In this entry, there is no written examination. Candidates are shortlisted based on their 12th marks and JEE rank. Once shortlisted they are called for the SSB interview and medical examination. Selected candidates receive technical training and an engineering degree during their three year training period at Cadets Training Wing. Later they undergo one year training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, before commissioning as Lieutenants in the Indian Army.

Army Nursing (B.Sc Nursing)

For girls who want to serve as officers, the Army Nursing Entry (B.Sc Nursing) is a good option. Female candidates who have passed 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology can apply for this entry. The selection process includes a written examination, interview, and medical test. After selection, candidates complete their B.Sc Nursing course at Armed Forces Medical institutions and are commissioned as officers in the Army Medical Services.
