Indian Military Academy Ranks
In this article we will discuss about the various ranks and appointments at Indian Military Academy. Life at the IMA is all about learning leadership before becoming an officer. During training, Gentleman Cadets (GCs) are given different appointments to help them understand responsibility, discipline, and command. These appointments are earned through hard work, good conduct, and overall performance, and each one plays an important role in running the academy smoothly.
At the very top is the Academy Under Officer (AUO). The AUO is considered the best all-round cadet of the course. This cadet usually commands the prestigious Passing Out Parade (POP), a moment every cadet dreams of. Many times, the AUO is also a strong contender for the Sword of Honour, making this one of the most respected appointments at IMA.
Another highly important role is the Academy Cadet Adjutant (ACA). The ACA is responsible for maintaining discipline across the entire academy. This appointment is usually given to one of the finest all-round cadets, known for discipline, maturity, and leadership. Like the AUO, the ACA may also be in the race for the Sword of Honour.

At the battalion level, the senior-most appointment is the Battalion Under Officer (BUO). Each battalion has one BUO, and the role is similar to that of the AUO but limited to the battalion. The BUO coordinates training, discipline, and administration at the battalion level and works closely with instructors.
Then comes the Battalion Cadet Adjutant (BCA), a name that instantly brings mixed emotions among Gentleman Cadets. BCAs are known as some of the most fearsome personalities on campus. They strictly enforce discipline, and many cadets remember punishments like the famous “Mussoorie Nights” long after training ends.
At the company level, leadership begins with the Senior Under Officer (SUO). Each company is headed by one SUO. Generally, the SUO is calm, approachable, and non-interfering unless required. The SUO ensures that the company functions smoothly and maintains standards without micromanaging.
Supporting the SUO is the Cadet Sergeant Major (CSM). The CSM is responsible for the day-to-day running of the company. From passing orders to awarding punishments, the CSM ensures discipline is maintained. Usually a strict taskmaster, the CSM is deeply respected and sometimes feared by juniors.

Handling the administrative side of company life is the Cadet Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS). The CQMS looks after stores, supplies, and logistics of the company. Most importantly (according to cadets), the CQMS ensures that tea and snacks arrive on time, a responsibility no one takes lightly at Indian Military Academy.
At the platoon level, leadership is handled by the Junior Under Officers (JUOs). Each company usually has three JUOs, with each one responsible for a platoon. This is often the first real leadership role for many cadets and helps them learn how to manage people directly.
Some appointments are also given as recognition of merit during training. Platoon Sergeant is awarded to meritorious cadets in the third term, while Corporals are given to deserving cadets in the second term. These appointments motivate cadets early in training and encourage healthy competition.
In simple words, IMA appointments are not about power, they are about preparation. Each role teaches Gentleman Cadets how to lead, manage pressure, and take responsibility. By the time cadets wear the rank of Lieutenant, they have already lived the life of a leader inside the academy.
