Let’s try to understand about Term-ASEAN a little deeper:
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was formed in 1967 by Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to promote political and economic cooperation and regional stability. The association was later joined by the current members, Cambodia being the latest who joined in 1999.
The ASEAN charter came into force on 15 th December 2008. The ASEAN community comprises of three pillars: The political-security community, Economic community and Socio-cultural community. ASEAN commands far greater influence on Asia-Pacific trade, political, and security issues than its members could achieve individually. This has driven ASEAN’s community building efforts. This work is based largely on consultation, consensus, and cooperation.
India-ASEAN relations: India’s relationship with ASEAN is a key pillar of our foreign policy and the foundation of our Act East Policy. The year 2017 was an important landmark as India and ASEAN commemorated 25 years of their partnership. India became a sectoral Partner of the ASEAN in 1992, Dialogue Partner in 1996 and Summit Level partner in 2002. There are, I total 30 Dialogues mechanisms between India and ASEAN, cutting across various sectors. India hosted the ASEAN-India Connectivity Summit (AICS) in December 2017, which is the latest step in furthering physical ties between India and Southeast Asia.
Also, India invited the heads of the states of all 10 members of ASEAN for the Republic Day parade and celebrations. Republic Day 2018 was the first time ever that so many guests were the chief guests at the parade which showcases India’s, Military Might. .
