Lt Gen Dheeraj Seth
The Indian Army is set to witness an important leadership change as Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth will take charge as the next Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) on April 1, 2026. This appointment is part of a planned reshuffle among senior Army officers aimed at strengthening leadership at the highest level.
Currently serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, Lt Gen Seth will move to Army Headquarters in New Delhi to assume his new role. The Vice Chief of the Army Staff is the second-highest ranking officer in the Indian Army and works closely with the Chief of Army Staff in managing operations, planning, and modernization efforts.

Lt Gen Seth is an Armoured Corps officer who was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1986. Over his long career, he has held several important command and staff positions, including leading operational formations and major Army commands. His experience in field leadership and strategic planning is expected to help strengthen the Army’s operational preparedness.
As Vice Chief, he will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day functioning at Army Headquarters, coordinating between different commands, and supporting modernization and strategic initiatives across the force. The position also involves advising senior defence leadership on military matters and ensuring readiness across various operational fronts.

This leadership transition reflects the Indian Army’s regular system of rotating senior officers between command and staff roles to maintain efficiency, continuity, and strong decision-making at the top level. With Lt Gen Dheeraj Seth stepping into this important position, the Army aims to continue strengthening its operational capability and future planning.
