As India prepares for Republic Day 2026, a young officer prepares to create history on Kartavya Path. Simran Bala will become the first woman officer to lead an all-male CRPF marching contingent at Republic Day parade.

Earlier, women CRPF officers commanded Republic Day contingents; however, for the first time, a woman officer will lead over 140 male personnel. This is a major milestone for India’s largest central armed police force. It is a big step forward for women in uniform.

A Historic First for the CRPF

Simran Bala will command a group of more than 140 male CRPF personnel as they march on Kartavya Path. Traditionally, senior male officers have led such contingents, making her role trendsetting and inspirational.

Her leadership reflects a changing tradition in uniformed services, where merit and skill are becoming the key factors for important roles.

Early Life and Background

Assistant Commandant Simran Bala comes from Nowshera in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. Growing up near the border, she was inspired by security forces and their service to the nation.

She cleared the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) exam on her first attempt in 2023 with an All-India Rank of 82, becoming one of the top candidates in the country.

After completing her training at the CRPF Academy in Gurugram, Simran received her commission as an Assistant Commandant in April 2025. Soon after, she joined the Bastariya Battalion in Chhattisgarh, where she actively served in challenging operational areas.

What This Means for Women in Uniform

Simran’s appointment sends a strong message that opportunities in armed forces are increasingly based on capability and hard work.

Her story is a source of pride for young women across India, especially those from border areas and small towns. Many see her as a role model who shows that dreams can come true with determination and focus.
