Eastern Army commander visits forward areas along LAC in Arunachal Pradesh

Lt Gen M M Naravane, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, completed a three-day visit to the border areas of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. During the visit, the Eastern Army commander reviewed the security situation and operational preparedness along the border.

Arunachal Pradesh shares its border with China and has witnessed instances of attempted incursions by patrols of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in the past. Given the terrain and climate, it is also one of the most difficult borders to manage, given China’s claims on Arunachal Pradesh.

Over the last few years, India has built up military capability to counter any large-scale attempt by the PLA to cross over. The Army has ignored minor incursions by PLA patrols as mere ‘confusion’ along an unmarked border. Deployment of lightweight howitzers, more surveillance and regular drills to airlift troops at short notice to forward areas are among the capability enhancement steps taken by the Indian side.

“The Army commander was accompanied by Lt Gen Manoj Pande, GOC, Gajraj Corps. He was also briefed in detail by all commanders on the prevailing security situation and operational preparedness along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). During his interaction with troops, the Army Commander appreciated their hard work and dedication in their brave endeavour to safeguard the nation’s border while operating in hostile terrain and adverse weather conditions,” a senior official said.
