How are you all? You must be preparing for the group discussion and lecturette round of SSB. For doing well in this phase, brushing up the current affairs and the topics of national and international importance plays a vital role. As we are talking about the current affairs, the relation of India with Pakistan and China tops the list. So here we are with one of the most important topic related to both the countries : the China Pakistan economic corridor.

China–Pakistan Economic Corridor also known by the acronym CPEC) is a collection of infrastructure projects that are currently under construction throughout Pakistan. Originally valued at $46 billion, the value of CPEC projects is worth $62 billion as of 2017.

 

Here are some key targets of CPEC:

 

  • A vast network of highways and railways are to be built in Pakistan.

  • To link seaports in Gwadar and Karachi with northern Pakistan.

  • Also a 1,100 kilometre long motorway will be built between the cities of Karachi and Lahore.

  • Upgradation of Karachi–Peshawar main railway line.

  • Extension of Pakistan's railway network to China's Southern Xinjiang Railway in Kashgar.

 

Now let's have a look at how it is going to affect India and the world:

  • This is an encouraging factor for the foreign investors who will now find a new arena for industrialization. Therefore, it is going to benefit China's markets in a great way.

  • The route will carry Chinese products all the way from Shanghai and other hubs to Europe and America.

  • The distance that Chinese products have to cover will reduce by 12000 kilometers.

  • In case there is a war between India and China, it would be easier for the latter to move its forces to the border as a result of CPEC.

  • UAE has shown its concerns with respect to CPEC because Dubai is one of the major trading hubs of the world.

  • It will lead to better economic growth for the province of Balochistan in Pakistan.

  • Most importantly, China is already present in Chittagong port (Bangladesh), Hambantota port (Sri Lanka), Port Sudan (Sudan), Maldives, Somalia and Seychelles. Control of Gwadar port establishes complete dominance of the Indian ocean by the Communist nation.

  • Furthermore, this corridor passes through the POK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir) in Jammu and Kashmir which actually belongs to India. Successful completion of this project will make India's claim on the area vague.

 

Lastly, it can be concluded that this is not going to be in favour of India. Whether for trade or security. And India need to be well prepared like we can see a good move of our Prime Minister regarding the Chabahar port.
