Belgorod – Russia Constructs world’s Longest Submarine
Just like its size, Russia always try to make something big. This time Russians has constructed world’s longest Submarine named as Belgorod.
It was laid down as an Oscar II-class vessel in 1992.
But construction proceeded in fits and starts as Russia went through multiple economic and political transformations, and its launch ceremony was delayed for decades.
In this article we will study some facts about Belgorod – World’s Longest Submarine
So Let’s start
It designed to support a variety of military missions, including the Poseidon long-range strategic nuclear torpedo.
The sub is far larger than anything operated by any other naval force, including the U.S. Navy. The six hundred foot long submarine displaces more water than a World War I battleship and can dive to a depth of 1,700 feet.
The Oscar II class was built to carry the heavy P-700 Granit anti-ship cruise missile, and the design has an unusually wide and spacious hull form to accommodate twin batteries of this weapon. But over the past seven years, Belgorod has been lengthened by 100 feet and re purposed for different tasks.
Purpose of Belgorod
- Firstly, It is designed to support special covert missions like installing seafloor sensors.
- It is believed to have the capability to support the top secret, deep-diving Losharik. It is a manned mini-sub that can access subsea cables and other seafloor infrastructure down to 1,000 meters.
- Secondly unlike other Oscar II submarines Belgorod has a large bulge at her stern with several hatches, and her starboard-side rudder skeg appears to have arrangements for towing.
- It is also the submarine deployment platform for the Poseidon, a long-range drone torpedo for delivering strategic nuclear warheads to littoral targets like seaports.
The hull was lengthened to approximately 184 meters and the ship’s displacement ballooned to 30,000 tons submerged–more than fifty percent greater than the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines. The result of an unfinished hull the Belgorod is a one-off, and there will not be another one like it.
Belgorod is neither an attack submarine nor a ballistic missile sub. A special mission submarine, It will be a mothership to other undersea vessels.
Russia has increased its military strength further. Experts say that 604 feet long Belgorod is so powerful that it can destroy the entire city by a single blow. In it, torpedoes are equipped with 6 nuclear weapons. The 6 Torpedo carry two meta tonne explosives.
Recently, India has entered into a $ 3 billion deal with Russia to lease the attacker submarine equipped with nuclear capability. Under this agreement, Russia will assign the submarine of Akula class to the Indian Navy by 2025.
