With a new update from joinindianarmy.nic.in through a YouTube video, all SSB aspirants faced a dilemma about the screening day at SSB. While the organization later clarified its stance, many are still curious to know about the SSB new screening process. Hence, we share a detailed account of what it entails.
Need for SSB New Screening Process
Before 1996, there was no screening stage in SSB. This means that all candidates who reported at the selection centre were assessed without any shortlisting. However, as the process became well-known among the youth, more number of aspirants started reporting for the SSB interview.
This saturated the assessors, and to avoid any gaps in assessment, the Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR) introduced the screening process. This included two stages:
- Officers Intelligence Rating (OIR) test
- Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
However, over the years, this screening process became subjective as a lot of deserving candidates could not make it to stage two of SSB due to their backgrounds. Hence, to keep everyone on level-playing field, the new screening process was introduced.
What is the SSB New Screening Process?
As per the official sources, the SSB new screening process will include two new tests:
- CSSS, that is, Computerized Stage-1 Selection System
- OPAM, that is, Objective Personality Assessment Measure
What makes these tests different from OIR and PPDT is that these are entirely dependent on a candidate’s cognitive traits. Both, CSSS and OPAM, are objective and the assessors’ bias will not affect the result of the new screening process.
Let us now understand both the tests in detail:
CSSS or Computerized Stage-1 Selection System
The CSSS is a digital screening test, which will happen on computers as against the usual pen and paper method. This test will have about 70 questions, and assess a candidate’s cognitive ability through reasoning.
The questions will be from topics such as pattern recognition, spatial and analytical ability, and memory among others. They assessment will be on their speed of decision-making and accuracy of responses in this section. Hence the OIR test will remain in picture.
OPAM or Objective Personality Assessment Measure
The next test will be OPAM, comprising about 120 questions. It will assess a candidate’s personality and behaviour under various stresses like time. Since this has more number of questions, you can understand that it carries more weightage in the SSB new screening process.
Here, candidates will get several situations and they have to answer these using rating scales. The idea is to assess personality traits like leadership, emotional intelligence, and officer-like thinking.
Benefits of SSB New Screening Process
Now that we have an idea about the SSB new screening process, let us look into the benefits of it.
- Fair chance: Many candidates cannot perform well in the group discussion after PPDT because they are not fluent in English or studied in vernacular languages. But, digital tests give each a fair chance.
- Removal of any subjective bias: A lot of times, the personal bias of assessors may affect chances of screening in, however, this will not matter now.
- Fast results: Unlike the previous process, the SSB new screening process will wrap up in about thirty minutes and the results will come instantly.
- Better introspection: If a candidate gets out in stage one, they will at least know what caused the same, such as slow calculations, and eventually, they can work on it.
Is SSB New Screening Process Happening In Centres?
Currently, several SSB and AFSB boards are conducting the SSB new screening process for candidates. However, please bear in mind that this is not the official screening stage right now. It is only happening on trial-basis to check if the process is actually feasible.
As of August 2026, the SSB new screening process has not been implemented. If you have your SSB lined up right now, you must prepare for OIR and PPDT only.
Implementing the new screening process will require better infrastructure like computers and connectivity, which will obviously, take time. So, any changes in the first stage will be announced well before time. You need not worry at all.
