INS Vagir – Kalvari Class Submarine Launched For Sea Trails

INS Vagir, the Scorpene class Submarine is launched for Sea trials on 12 November 2020. It is one of the six Scorpene Class/Kalvari Class submarines designed by the French Naval Group and Built by Mazagoan Dock Limited, Mumbai under Project 75 of Indian Navy. The first two submarines i.e. INS Kalvari and INS Khanderi are already commissioned commissioned into the Indian Navy. The next two submarines of this class i.e INS Karanj and INS Vela are undergoing the intense Sea trials with Indian Navy. The Name Vagir means the deadliest sea predator of Arabian sea.

The INS Vagir Submarine was launched by Vijaya Naik, wife of Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik. The Submarine is equipped with state of art stealth Technology.

Type : Diesel Electric Attack Submarine

Displacement : 1600 tons (Surfaced) and 1800 tons (Submerged)

Speed : 20 Kmph (Surfaced) and 40 Kmph (Submerged)

Range : 12000 Km (Surfaced) and 1020 Km (Submerged)

Crew : 45

Armament :

  1. French SUT Torpedoes’
  2. Exocet Anti Ship Missiles
  3. Underwater Mines

There are future plans to equip the INS Vagir and other Kalvari Class Submarines with Brahmos Missile and Varunastra Torpedo.
