Bill Introduced In US Congress To Make India NATO Ally
NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization
NATO is an alliance of 29 countries from North America to Europe which was formed in 1949 with the signing of Washington Treaty. NATO’s fundamental goal is to safeguard allies freedom and security by political and military means.
Recently a bill was introduced in the US Congress which aims to make India a NATO ally. So, in this article, we will study all about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and what if India becomes its ally. This article will be beneficial from SSB point of view or any other interview.
So Let’s start,
The Treaty of Brussels, signed on 17 March 1948 by Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and the United Kingdom, is considered the precursor to the NATO agreement. This treaty established a military alliance, which later became the Western European Union.
American participation was thought necessary in order to counter the military power of the Soviet Union, and therefore talks for a new military alliance began almost immediately. These talks resulted in the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed in Washington on 4 April 1949. It included the five Treaty of Brussels states, United States, Canada, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
Because of geography, Australia and New Zealand missed out on membership. In place of this, the ANZUS agreement was made by the United States with these nations.
Structure of NATO
- The decision-making body is the North Atlantic Council (NAC), and the member state representatives also sit on the Defence Planning Committee (DPC) and the Nuclear Planning Group.
- The Secretary-General directs the civilian International Staff, that is divided into administrative divisions, offices and other organizations.
- Also Secretary General is responsible to the NAC, DPC, and NPG is a host of committees that supervise the various logistics and standardization agencies.
Alliances: NATO participates in three alliances
- The Istanbul Cooperation Initiative – It works for peace throughout the larger Middle East region. It includes four members of the Gulf Cooperation Council. They are Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
- The Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council – It allows partners a vehicle to become NATO members. Also, It includes 23 non-NATO countries that support NATO’s purpose.
- The Mediterranean Dialogue – It seeks to stabilize the Middle East. It non-NATO members include Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization cooperates with eight other countries in joint security issues. There are five in Asia. They are Australia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mongolia and New Zealand. There are two in the Middle East — Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Purpose
- To protect the freedom of its members. It considers an armed attack upon one shall be considered an attack upon them all.
- To protect the stability of the region.
Should India join NATO? What will be the consequences?
First of all, it is geographically impossible to join. NATO, as it stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization one, has to be in the North Atlantic region to be its part. But there is something called global NATO that had extended an invitation for India to join.
- We can get a presence in Europe and geopolitical experience in our defence. Secondly, if India becomes an ally of NATO then it will be beneficial for us in terms of dealing with Chinese aggression or the most obvious two front war situation.
- India will have to give a certain amount of money to NATO as a donation.
- Also, India will have to participate in current wars as NATO is there: Syria and Afghanistan etc.
- Consequently, Our foreign policy will become weak as influenced by other countries.
Why NATO was in highlights?
Recently a bill was introduced in US Congress that aims India to put on par with NATO allies. A group of half a dozen influential American lawmakers have reintroduced important legislation in the House of Representatives which seeks to advance the US-India strategic relationship.
Furthermore, the US-India Enhanced Cooperation Act would amend the Arms Export Control Act to put India on par with its allies and Israel, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. Also, If enacted, the legislation would ensure that the US State Department treat India as its ally for the purposes of the Arms Export Control Act.
