Lt. Deepender Singh Dhami : From Repeated NDA & SSB Setbacks To Army Officer

The Inspiring Story Of Lt Deepender Singh Dhami

Success is rarely a straight road. The journey of Lt. Deepender Singh Dhami from a small village in Khatima, Uttarakhand, to becoming an Indian Army officer is a powerful example of perseverance, resilience and the courage to keep trying.

Coming from a family with no Army background, Deepender became the first-generation Army officer in his family. His journey was shaped by repeated attempts, setbacks and difficult choices, but he never allowed failure to change his ultimate goal.

A Teacher Who Changed His Perspective

Deepender first thought about joining the Armed Forces during his school days. When a teacher asked students about their career aspirations, he said that he wanted to become an IAS officer.

His teacher, who had an Air Force background, encouraged him to consider a career in the Armed Forces. The teacher’s words introduced Deepender to a new possibility of serving the nation in uniform.

That conversation stayed with him, and gradually, the dream of becoming an Armed Forces officer became stronger.

Four NDA Attempts and a New Path

After Class 12, Deepender appeared for the NDA examination four times. Despite his efforts, he could not clear the written examination and therefore did not get an opportunity to appear for SSB through NDA.

Instead of giving up, he continued his education and completed his graduation.

During this period, he was selected for the Air Force XY Group and also for SSC GD. However, his ultimate ambition remained unchanged: he wanted to become an officer.

After graduation, he turned towards the CDS examination. His first attempt was unsuccessful, but he cleared the written examination in subsequent attempts, opening the door to the SSB process.

Three SSB Setbacks

Clearing the written examination was only the beginning.

Deepender’s first SSB at Prayagraj ended with him being Conference Out. At his second SSB in Bhopal, he was Screened Out. His third SSB at Jalandhar again ended with a Conference Out.

Three SSB attempts brought three different setbacks, but Deepender continued to pursue his goal.

He also appeared for other competitive examinations during this period. He cleared SSC CGL Prelims and eventually secured final selection in SSC CPO. Yet, he chose not to join because his dream of becoming an officer through CDS remained stronger.

The Fourth Attempt Brings Success

The Jalandhar SSB was particularly difficult because it was his last opportunity for the Indian Military Academy (IMA). Being Conference Out made the disappointment even harder to accept.

During this phase, Deepender began spending more time at college. Friends and others around him encouraged him to contest the college election for President, recognising his leadership qualities. Although the elections were eventually postponed, the experience gave him another reason to remain engaged and move forward.

Then came another CDS opportunity. His fourth SSB at Bangalore became the turning point.

After three unsuccessful SSB experiences, Deepender once again went through the selection process. This time, his perseverance finally paid off when he was recommended in his fourth SSB attempt.

For Deepender and his family, the achievement represented much more than a recommendation. It was the result of years of preparation, setbacks and an unwavering belief in his dream.

From OTA Chennai to the Indian Army

Following his recommendation through CDS, Deepender joined the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai.

The focus now shifted from earning an opportunity to preparing for the responsibility of becoming an officer. Through rigorous military training, he developed the qualities required to lead, serve and take responsibility.

After successfully completing his training, Deepender was commissioned into the Indian Army as a Lieutenant.
