A Childhood Shaped by the Mountains
Born in the beautiful valley of Zanskar in Ladakh, Stanzin Tsangyang grew up surrounded by some of the most challenging yet breathtaking landscapes in India.

She joined Lamdon Model School, Leh, where she spent nearly fourteen years living in a hostel, away from her family and familiar surroundings.
For a young girl from Zanskar, spending so many years away from home was itself a significant sacrifice. Yet, instead of allowing the distance to become an obstacle, Stanzin used the opportunity to focus on her education and future.
Her academic performance earned her a scholarship for higher studies, opening the door to the next chapter of her journey.
From Ladakh to Assam: Becoming an Engineer
After completing her schooling, Stanzin pursued Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University in Assam.
Moving from the mountains of Ladakh to Assam represented another major transition. It exposed her to a different environment, culture and way of life while giving her an opportunity to build a strong academic and professional foundation.
It was during her college years, however, that a new dream began to take shape.
How NCC Introduced Her to the Indian Army
Stanzin’s introduction to the possibility of becoming an Army officer came through her association with the National Cadet Corps (NCC).
Coming from a completely civilian family with no history of military service, the idea of joining the Armed Forces was unconventional. There was no established military tradition in her family or community to follow.
But NCC gave her a glimpse into military life and introduced her to the various pathways through which young men and women can become officers in the Indian Army.
What began as an exposure to the Armed Forces gradually developed into a deeply rooted ambition.
She wanted to wear the olive-green uniform. More importantly, she wanted to serve the nation.
