How To Prepare For NDA Exam?

Now that you know what the NDA exam is, you might also be wondering how to prepare for NDA. We have shortlisted five basic steps to help you start with preparation. Remember that end of the day, your consistency is what will help you crack the exam well. Therefore, be consistent and honest in following these tips.

I. Understand the Exam Pattern

The first step to know how to prepare for NDA exam is to understand the examination pattern and syllabus. The NDA written examination consists of two papers:

  • Mathematics for 300 marks
  • General Ability Test (GAT) for 600 marks

The total marks for the written examination are 900. Candidates who qualify the written examination are called for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, which carries another 900 marks.

The Mathematics paper tests numerical ability and mathematical concepts of candidates to the elementary level, while the GAT covers a range of subjects such as English, General Knowledge, Science, History, Geography, and Current Affairs.

The official notification carries a detailed description of the syllabus for candidates to abide by. Hence, understanding the pattern helps aspirants allocate time according to the weightage and difficulty of different subjects.

Solidify basics

II. Solidify Basics with NCERT

NCERT textbooks are an excellent starting point for NDA preparation. Candidates should, therefore, focus on understanding the basic concepts rather than mugging up facts.

For Mathematics, revise topics such as algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, statistics, probability, et cetera. Practise questions regularly to improve calculation speed and accuracy, and know the different formula too.

For Science, study basic concepts from school-level textbooks. Pay attention to everyday scientific application and fundamental principles. Similarly, for History and Geography, revise major historical events, India’s freedom struggle, physical geography, climate, rivers, and important geographical features.

III. Prepare English Strategically

English is an important part of the GAT paper and can boost your performance effectively. Hence, aspirants should develop their vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and sentence-correction skills. You may start to:

  • Read English newspapers or quality articles regularly
  • Maintain a vocabulary notebook
  • Revise commonly confused words, synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and phrases
  • Practice PYQs to identify frequently tested grammar concepts

Avoid collecting information from too many sources. A limited number of reliable resources, revised consistently, is more effective than repeatedly switching between study materials.

IV. Practice PYQs

Solving PYQ papers is essential for understanding the actual difficulty level, question formats, and recurring topics. So, begin with topic-wise questions after completing each chapter. Gradually move to full-length mock tests under examination conditions.

After every test, analyse incorrect answers and questions that took too much time. Identify whether the problem arose from weak concepts, calculation errors, poor time management, or guesswork.

Please remember that the NDA examination also includes one-third negative marking, so should avoid random guessing. Accuracy is as important as attempting a large number of questions.

V. Follow a Consistent Study Timetable

The next tip on how to prepare for NDA is having a daily schedule. A consistent study schedule will help you cover the syllabus without unnecessary pressure. So, allocate daily time to Mathematics, English, General Knowledge, and revision according to your strengths and weaknesses.

For example, you may dedicate two hours to Mathematics, one hour to English, two hours to General Knowledge, and an additional hour to revision or mock-test analysis. Adjust these timings based on your available study hours and preparation level.

Take short breaks between sessions and revise previously studied topics regularly. Weekly tests can help measure progress and identify areas requiring additional attention.

Final Thoughts

So, this was our take on how to prepare for NDA (1) 2027 exam. Please bear in mind that clearing NDA requires a combination of strong fundamentals, regular practice, effective revision, and physical and mental discipline. Therefore, start with the official syllabus, use reliable study materials, solve previous years’ papers, and analyse your performance consistently. Most importantly, remain patient and consistent throughout your preparation.
