From Agniveer to Proud Army Officer: Inspiring Story of Vikas Gautam

From a small village in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, to the parade ground of Officers Training Academy (OTA) Gaya, the journey of Senior Under Officer (SUO) Vikas Gautam is a powerful story of ambition, discipline and perseverance.

His dream of wearing the olive-green uniform began at an early age. But unlike many who enter the Armed Forces through the traditional route, Vikas first experienced military life as an Agniveer. Serving as a T-90 tank gunner with The Scinde Horse (14 Horse), Armoured Corps, he gained firsthand experience of the discipline, teamwork and responsibility that define military service.

That experience did not end his ambition. Instead, it strengthened his determination to become an Army officer.

A Dream Born in a Small Village

Vikas Gautam hails from a small village in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. Growing up away from the country’s major military centres, he nurtured a simple yet powerful ambition of serving the nation in the olive greens.

His academic journey led him to pursue Computer Science Engineering. While engineering opened the door to a promising professional career, his aspiration to serve in uniform remained strong.

Eventually, he chose a path that would give him direct experience of life in the Indian Army.

From Engineer to Agniveer

After completing his engineering, Vikas joined the Indian Army as an Agniveer.

His posting to The Scinde Horse (14 Horse) of the Armoured Corps introduced him to one of the Army’s most demanding operational environments. As a T-90 tank gunner, he became part of a crew responsible for operating one of the Indian Army’s main battle tanks. The experience was transformative.

Working with an armoured regiment taught him that military service is about far more than physical strength. It demands precision, teamwork, discipline and an unwavering sense of responsibility.

Every task, training exercise and operational responsibility added to his understanding of what it meant to be a soldier.

More importantly, his experience as an Agniveer strengthened a dream to become an officer.

The Decision to Aim Higher

For Vikas, serving as an Agniveer was not the destination. It became a stepping stone.

The time spent in the Armoured Corps gave him an understanding of leadership from the ground level. He had experienced the importance of following orders, working as part of a team and taking responsibility for his role.

These lessons eventually motivated him to pursue a commission as an Army officer.

He appeared for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview and successfully cleared the selection process.

The next chapter of his journey took him to OTA Gaya.

A New Beginning at OTA Gaya

Joining Officers Training Academy, Gaya, marked a significant transition. He was no longer preparing simply to serve as a soldier. He was being trained to lead soldiers. The transition demanded a different level of physical endurance, mental toughness and leadership ability.

At OTA Gaya, the guidance of instructors and senior cadets played an important role in shaping his personality. His confidence grew, his decision-making abilities improved and his understanding of leadership evolved.

The training pushed him beyond his comfort zone, demanding consistency and determination every day.

For someone who had already experienced military life as an Agniveer, the academy offered a new perspective: the responsibility of an officer is not only to perform but also to inspire, guide and lead others.

Turning Determination into Achievement

Vikas’s performance at OTA Gaya reflected the determination he had developed throughout his journey.

Among his notable achievements was leading the academy in Cross Country and securing a Gold Medal.

He was also awarded a Merit Card in Physical Training, recognising his performance and commitment to physical fitness.

Adding another remarkable achievement to his academy journey, he became a record holder in the Battle Obstacle Course.

These accomplishments demonstrate the physical standards and competitive spirit required during military training.

But perhaps more importantly, they show how his earlier experience in the Army combined with the rigorous training at OTA Gaya to transform him into a more confident and capable leader.
