A Daughter, A Dream, and a Uniform
Every military commissioning ceremony is filled with pride, emotion, and unforgettable moments. For the family of Lieutenant Sheetal Malhan, the occasion was even more special. As they watched their daughter step closer to becoming an officer in the Indian Army, they felt a mixture of happiness, pride, and responsibility.
Their words captured the emotion of countless military families across India: “We have given our daughter to the nation.”
Behind those words lies a story of determination, sacrifice, and a young woman’s dream to serve the country.
A Historic Generation of Women in Uniform
Lieutenant Sheetal Malhan belongs to a new generation of women who are creating history in the Indian Armed Forces.
The doors of the National Defence Academy (NDA) were opened to women following a landmark decision in 2021. The first batch of women cadets joined the academy in August 2022, marking a significant moment in India’s military history. Sheetal was among these pioneering cadets who chose to take on the challenge of one of the toughest military training institutions in the country.
The Dream Began With a Decision
When Sheetal learned that women could now join the NDA, she immediately began preparing for the entrance examination. Her goal was clear. She wanted to wear the uniform and serve the nation.
Like thousands of defence aspirants, she first cleared the written examination. She then successfully completed the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, one of the most challenging stages of the officer selection process.
However, her journey was not without obstacles.

A Challenge That Tested Her Determination
After clearing the written examination and SSB, Sheetal faced a setback during the medical examination. She was required to meet strict fitness standards and was given a limited period to reduce excess weight before reporting again.
Many candidates would have become discouraged. Instead, Sheetal treated it like a mission.
She followed a disciplined routine, worked hard on her fitness, and successfully achieved the required standards within the given time. Her determination paid off, and she earned her place at the National Defence Academy.
This episode highlights an important lesson for defence aspirants: setbacks do not define your journey. Your response to them does.

Three Years That Changed Everything
Military academies do much more than teach drill and physical fitness. They transform young individuals into future leaders.
When Sheetal returned home after joining NDA, her family noticed a remarkable change. The confidence in her personality, the discipline in her daily life, and the maturity in her conduct reflected the impact of military training. Her father described her as an example of officer-like qualities and professionalism.
The transformation was not only physical. It was a transformation of character.
The success of officers like Lieutenant Sheetal Malhan represents more than an individual achievement. It reflects the changing face of the Indian Armed Forces and the growing opportunities available to young women who wish to serve the nation.
As more women enter the Armed Forces through NDA, IMA, OTA, and other training institutions, they continue to strengthen India’s military tradition of courage, leadership, and service.
