Facts about india and UN Peacekeeping operations
- Most importantly as one of the founding members of the UN, India's contribution to the maintenance of international peace and security has been second to none .
- Besides India has been the largest troop contributor to UN missions since its inception.The first deployment started in 1950's,when India sent troops to korea in 1953-54.
- Recent peacekeeping operations have tended to be multidimentional,and include police monitors and election observers .
- Therefore India has considerable experience in de-mining activities and has made significant contributionsto the de-mining work in various missions.
- So far India has participated in 43 peacekeeping missions.
- India's first all women contingent in peacekeeping mission was deployed in 2007 to the UN Operation in Liberia .

- korea(1950-54)-longest tenure by any unit under the UN flag.
- Middle East (1956–67)- India was part of the United nation emergency force (UNEF), where for the first time armed troop contingents were deployed.
- Congo(1960-1964)- Capt GS Salaria was awarded posthumously the Paramvir chakra for action in Katanga, Southern Congo.

CURRENT UN MISSIONS
The Indian Armed forces are currently undertaking the following UN Missions.
- Lebanon (Since Dec 1998)
- Congo (Since January 2005)-The Current Army chief Bipin Rawat once commanded a MONUSCO bridge.
- Sudan and South Sudan (Since April 2005)
- Golan Heights (UNDOF) (Since February 2006) -Current crisis due to syrian conflict has impacted the mission .
- The Ivory Coast (since April 2004)
- Haiti (since Dec 1997)
- Liberia(since April 2007)
