The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani announced the Union Cabinet’s decision of giving a two-year extension to Agniveers, who were set to retire from active service and join the society as trained and motivated youth.
The announcement, which came on 4 November, 2026 following a recommendation from the Armed Forces, was welcomed by everyone. We tell you the important details regarding this two-year extension to Agniveers, today.
What Is The Agnipath Scheme?
Before we tell you about the two-year extension to Agniveers, let us first understand the basics of the Agnipath Scheme is.
The Agnipath Scheme, also known as Tour of Duty (ToD), is a framework to recruit personnel at the sepoy-level in the Indian Armed Forces for a period of four years.
After successful completion of four years, only 25% of each batch would be selected for regular enrolment on merit. The remaining 75% would leave military service and join society as dedicated and motivated youth. The latter will also receive the following:
- A severance package, also called Seva Nidhi
- A skill certificate
- Special bank loans
- Priority in defence jobs, subject to eligibility
Owing to this special opportunity to experience military life, many motivated young men and women joined as Agniveers in the tri-services and contributed well to their organization during the four-year tenure, which ends in 2026.

What Changes Now?
After the successful completion of their tenure, the top 25% of Agniveers were retained in service for another fifteen years. However, the remaining 75% were to leave the military until the Union Cabinet’s recent decision.
On 4 November, CDS General Raja Subramani announced the decision that provides a two-year extension to Agniveers who were expected to retire in 2026.
After the second engagement period of two years, they will be offered an opportunity for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to willingness and checks on physical fitness, adaptability, discipline and vigilance records.
Please note that the extension creates another route to regular service but, it does not make permanent enrolment automatic.
Higher Remuneration and Improved Benefits
The Ministry of Defence has stated that the two-year extension to Agniveers will carry higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits. These provisions are intended to recognise the additional service of Agniveers who choose to continue.
The government has not yet specified the revised pay amounts or the exact calculation of the enhanced Seva Nidhi and seniority benefits. Further details will clarify how the arrangement will operate across the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
Reason For Two-Year Extension To Agniveers
You might wonder now why the two-year extension to Agniveers was announced suddenly.
To be sure, the decision follows a four-year assessment of the Agnipath Scheme and the performance of its first batches across the tri-services. As per the Ministry of Defence, the evaluation found Agniveers to have demonstrated physical fitness, morale, discipline and technological adaptability. This also included positive feedback on their skills and performance.
Other factors that contributed to this decision are as follows:
- Wider recruitment across districts
- A more standardised and transparent recruitment process
- Opening of various branches of the Armed Forces to women
- Need to balance the aspirations of young personnel with the operational requirements of the military
Around 18,300 Agniveers from the first batch were expected to complete their four-year engagement and leave the services by December, 2026. The two-year extension to Agniveers gives eligible and willing personnel an alternative to leaving after their initial term.

Final Thoughts
Please note that the decision regarding the two-year extension to Agniveers does not scrap the Agnipath scheme. Rather, this second engagement period adds another stage before regular enrolment is considered for the remaining Agniveers.
For the Indian Armed Forces, the arrangement could help retain trained personnel and make use of the skills and experience they have gained. For Agniveers, it offers additional service, improved financial benefits and another opportunity to qualify for a long-term career in uniform.
