Infantry Day 2026: Celebrating 80 Years of Courage, Dedication and Sacrifice

Every year on October 27, the Indian Army commemorates Infantry Day which is also known as Shaurya Diwas. This is done to honour the bravery, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of its infantry soldiers.

The day marks a defining moment in India’s military history when Indian troops landed at Srinagar in 1947 to defend Jammu and Kashmir against a Pakistan-backed tribal invasion. This year, the country celebrates the 80th Infantry Day and we tell you about it.

The History of Infantry Day

You might wonder how this very day was formally declared. Interestingly, the origins of the Infantry Day can be traced to 27 October, 1947, after India gained independence through a painful partition. The princely state of Jammu and Kashmir faced an invasion by tribal raiders backed by Pakistan, threatening its security.

Once Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to get India’s support in countering the invaders, the Indian troops were mobilised to defend the state.

On the morning of 27 October, the soldiers of 1 Sikh Regiment were airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar by the Indian Air Force. They became the first Indian Army troops to land at Srinagar airfield in response to the invasion.

These infantrymen engaged the advancing raiders and played a crucial role in preventing Srinagar from falling into the hands of the enemy. This historic operation is commemorated every year as Infantry Day to recognise the soldiers whose actions helped safeguard Jammu and Kashmir.

Why Is Infantry Day Significant for the Indian Army?

While we all know about the Infantry Day, do you know why the day is so significant to the Indian Army. We decode the relevance of this very day for you now, which aims to honour and recognize the role of the infantry.

Honouring the Backbone of the Army

The Infantry is the Indian Army’s largest fighting arm and is often referred to as the backbone of the organization. Infantry soldiers operate across diverse terrains, including mountains, deserts, forests and plains. Their ability to seize and hold ground, defend positions and engage adversaries at close quarters makes them an important part of military operations. Hence, Infantry Day recognises this operational contribution.

Remembering the Sacrifice of Soldiers

The Infantry Day also pays tribute to the infantry personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. The ceremonies at war memorials on this occasion, which also include wreath-laying at the National War Memorial, honour fallen soldiers. It also recognises the veterans and the families of those who have served, highlighting the human cost of military service.

Reinforcing Regimental Traditions and Values

The Indian Army’s infantry regiments have distinctive histories, traditions and battle honours. Hence, the Infantry Day reinforces the values of courage, camaraderie, discipline, selfless service and devotion to duty that shape the very identity of infantry soldiers. These traditions also inspire serving personnel and future generations of military leaders.

Recognising the Evolving Role of Infantry

Today, modern military operations demand advanced technology, situational awareness and coordination with other combat arms and services. The infantry units must adapt to surveillance systems, drones, night-fighting equipment, improved communications and evolving battlefield threats. Therefore, Infantry Day recognises not only its historic achievements but also its continuing modernisation and operational readiness.

Final Thoughts

Please note that the Infantry Day is not just a commemorative occasion but a tribute to the brave soldiers who stand at the forefront of the Indian Army’s land operations and ensure that we sleep peacefully at our homes.

As India marks the 80th Infantry Day in 2026, the occasion honours generations of infantrymen who have defended the country across challenging battlefields and operational environments. Their legacy continues to inspire generations of defence aspirants.
