Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw
Every year, India celebrates the birth anniversary of Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, popularly known as Sam Bahadur, one of the greatest military leaders in Indian history. His leadership, courage, and sharp wit not only inspired soldiers but also shaped the modern Indian Army. He remains the symbol of professionalism, fearless decision-making, and true military leadership.
Sam Manekshaw was born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar. He studied at Sherwood College in Nainital and later joined the first batch of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.
In 1934, he was commissioned into the British Indian Army, beginning a military career that would span four decades and five wars.

During World War II, Manekshaw displayed extraordinary bravery while fighting in Burma against Japanese forces. He was severely wounded by machine-gun fire but continued leading his troops despite his injuries.
His courage earned him the Military Cross, one of the highest gallantry awards of that time. This incident became legendary, showcasing his determination and dedication to duty.
Sam Manekshaw is best remembered for his leadership during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.
As Chief of Army Staff, he made a bold decision when political leadership wanted immediate military action. Manekshaw advised waiting until the Army was fully prepared, ensuring proper logistics, equipment, and weather conditions.
When the war finally began in December 1971, India achieved a historic victory within just 13 days, leading to the surrender of over 90,000 Pakistani troops. This is one of the largest military surrenders since World War II.

Manekshaw was famous not only for his military brilliance but also for his humour and honesty. He spoke fearlessly, even in front of political leaders, always prioritizing the safety and preparedness of his soldiers. This earned him immense respect across ranks.
In 1973, Sam Manekshaw was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, becoming the first officer in the Indian Army to receive this five-star rank. It is a rare honour reserved for exceptional military leadership.
