Hence, today, we tell you why this day is celebrated, and what other things make it special.
Brief History of Indian Air Force
The present-day Indian Air Force was founded on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force to the British. Initially, it operated the Westland Wapiti, which was a British bi-plane and its first operational squadron was formed in 1933 as No. 1 Squadron.
During the Second World War, the force played an important role in operations in the Burma theatre, earned the title “Royal”, and came to be known as the Royal Indian Air Force.
However, following India’s independence in 1947, the force continued to evolve as an independent military organization and finally in 1950, the word “Royal” was dropped, once India became a Republic. Hence, the Indian Air Force was reborn.
Since then, the IAF has undergone modernization, developed advanced capabilities in fighter aviation, transport, helicopters, air defence and surveillance, and also proved its mettle through actions.
