The Indian Army understands the significance of technical acumen and to make use of it, it conducts the SSB interview for qualified men under the TGC entry. However, despite cracking the SSB many of them become TGC merit out candidates due to the limited number of vacancies.
But, what happens to such candidates and can they still join the academy? Today we share a topic that not many people know of. We will build on what the TGC entry is, and what the official sources say about those who do not qualify the merit.
What is the TGC Entry?
The TGC entry stands for the Technical Graduate Course Entry, which is conducted twice each year to recommend suitable candidates to become officers in the Indian Army. This is an SSB direct entry which provides permanent commission as well as one year of seniority to those who get selected.
This means that their service begins with their training and one year after getting commissioned, they are promoted to the rank of Captain. The eligibility for the TGC entry is as follows:
- Unmarried male citizens of India, a subject of Nepal/Bhutan or Tibetan refugees aged between 20 to 27 years
- An engineering graduate (BE/B.Tech) with no backlog
Female engineering graduates are not eligible for permanent commission through TGC. Hence, they appear for the SSC Tech Entry to the Indian Army.
All the qualified candidates who are medically fit begin their training for a year at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. However, as we all know, the number of vacancies for this entry is quite less, hence many do not make it to their dream academy and are called TGC merit out candidates.
But does this mean that they need to restart their SSB journey from scratch? Well, not really!
Can TGC Merit Out Candidates Join The Academy?
Interestingly, getting merit out is not the end of things for TGC merit out candidates. You would be surprised to know that despite falling short of merit, they can still make it to the military training academy.
However, most people do not know this nuance which is explicitly mentioned in the official notification. As per the credible sources, all those TGC merit out candidates who don’t make it through the merit list are considered as Short Service Commission or SSC candidates. You can refer to the following extract from the official notification of TGC-144.
The paragraph enclosed within the red rectangle reads, “Recommended candidates of TGC-144th course (Jan 2027) whose merit is not within the number of allotted vacancies of respective Engineering streams, may be offered to join Short Service Commission (Tech) Course (Apr 2027), subject to meeting all other eligibility conditions & availability of unutilized vacs in SSC(T) course for respective Engineering streams”.
So, let’s say you appeared for TGC entry and your stream/branch had only 5 vacancies for the said course but you were ranked as All India Rank 7. Now, despite being one of the TGC merit out candidates, you will be considered for the SSC course and get a joining letter for the relevant course at the Officers Training Academy in Gaya, Bihar.
However, such candidates will be treated as SSC officers through their service and will retire after a service of 10 to 14 years, unless granted permanent commission.
