Gaganyaan astronauts to use agra based parachutes

The crew module of the Gaganyaan will be brought back to the Earth by a pair of parachutes specially made by ADRDE. Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) – one of the laboratories under the Defence Research and Development Organisation is based in agra.

Each of the parachutes is capable of carrying four tonnes of weight. ADRDE supplied 10 of such high strength parachutes to ISRO for trials

The Gaganyaan spacecraft is being designed to carry three people. The crewed vehicle is planned to be launched on ISRO's GSLV Mk III in December 2021 and orbit earth for upto 7 days. 

The Indian astronauts will stay at a low earth orbit at an elevation of 400 km. On their journey back home, they would first have to lower the Gaganyaan to a 120 km orbit, where the separation of crew module would take place. After separation, it would take about 36 minutes to descend.

 

List of various products designed by ADRDE are as follows:

 

1.) Recovery parachute system – Recovery Parachute Systems are used for recovery the various types of payloads. 

 

2.) Helinet For CHEETAH Helicopter – The Heli-net can be used for carrying supply items such as food, medicines, clothing, water, fuel etc. underslung of the Helicopter. It can also be used in rescue/relief operations.

 

3.) Inflatable Radome – it is designed with an objective to serve as a shelter to provide controlled environment for effective and continuous functioning of expensive electronic and strategic systems.

 

4.) Heavy Drop System 16T – consisting of a platform and a highly advanced system of parachutes to drop loads consisting of military stores such as vehicles.

 

5.) Unmanned Small Airship System – Unmanned Small Airship System can be used for coastline surveillance, coastal area monitoring and Civil Management, Disaster Management, monitoring of airports and Intruder detection 

 

6.) Tactical Aerostat – This design was undertaken in response to Army's requirement of an Aerostat system which will be operating at 12000 ft plus height with the payload. It can be deployed at the China border to keep an eye on border movements.
