Why Is IAF Day Celebrated?
While most of you know why the Indian Air Force Day is celebrated each year, for the unaware, the IAF Day celebrations happen every year on 8 October. This is the very day on which, in 1932, the Indian Air Force was established as an auxiliary force for the British. The motive was three-fold:
- Expansion of air power of the British
- Reduce the dependence on British pilots
- Enhance the preparedness after WWI
The very next year, the first squadron was also raised with five pilots, one of which was Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee, OBE, who went on to become the Chief of Air Staff after Independence. Since then, the Indian Air Force has rapidly evolved to become the third strongest air force in the world.
