What are Indian Air Force Badges?
The Indian Air Force badges are also known as brevet or qualification badges and are worn on the uniform to represent the qualification or specialisation of a personnel. These badges are different from the ranks that are worn on the shoulders. But, you might wonder why these badges are needed.
Please know that the Indian Air Force badges aren’t just decorations, but indicators of an individual’s professional identity in the organization. For example, if someone wears the IAF pilot wings, you know that the person is qualified to fly an aircraft. Hence, it signifies the area of expertise of an individual.
Indian Air Force Badges
As we have told you already, there are several Indian Air Force badges that exist in the organization, and each symbolizes something specific. We tell you about the major badges that you will find personnel earning in the IAF.
Pilot’s Badge
This is the most well-known of the Indian Air Force badges, which consists of a pair of wings with “IAF” written in the centre, and surrounded by a laurel wreath. Above this sits the National Emblem of India. It signifies that the wearer is eligible to fly an aircraft.
Interestingly, there are three kinds of pilots in IAF: Fighter, Transport, and Helicopter. However, irrespective of which stream you are in, you will wear the same Pilot’s Badge on your uniform. Also, unlike other Indian Air Force badges, this one can only be earned by a commissioned officer.
Navigator’s Badge
Next in the list of Indian Air Force badges is the Navigator’s Badge. It only comprises one outspread wing with the letter “N” surrounded by a laurel wreath. Here too, the National Emblem of India sits on the top.
This is only earned by those who are proficient in navigation, which forms an essential part of aviation. These individuals help a pilot with the position, direction, route, and other technicalities which are important to ensure a planned flight path.
Flight Engineer’s Badge
This is another one of the Indian Air Force badges which signifies the qualification of a personnel as a flight engineer with IAF. In terms of design, it is similar to the Navigator’s Badge with the letter “N” being replaced by “E”.
A flight engineer looks into the monitoring and managing of aircraft systems, generally on the aircraft. This personnel examines the engine, mechanical and electrical systems, and aircraft performance parameters among other technicalities.
Signaller’s Badge
Similar to the Navigator’s Badge is the Signaller’s Badge, with the only exception being the letter “S” in place of “N”. Flying an aircraft is a matter of immense responsibility and requires a lot of technical checks. Hence, a signaller also comes to the picture.
This specialized individual deals with communication and signalling duties, especially during flight. However, with modern technologies, their nature of responsibility has undergone several changes.
Flight Gunner’s Badge
This is another one of the Indian Air Force badges, which signifies a personnel’s qualification of undertaking airborne weapon-related roles. Hence, the insignia also uses the letter “G” to distinguish the badge from others. But, pls know that the nature of responsibility for an Indian Air Force flight gunner has also changed with technological advancement.
ATC and Flight Controller Badges
The ATC Badge is earned by a personnel who is a qualified air traffic controller for the Indian Air Force. It follows a distinct design of an eagle holding a bolt of lightning with its claws.
Similarly, there also exists a Flight Controller Badge which is meant for fighter controllers. Again, the design remains similar to the Navigator’s Badge, with the letters “FC” replacing “N”. The insignias are different because the role of an FC is more tactical than an ATC’s.
