If you are an engineering graduate, you must have heard about the SSC Tech vs TGC entry debate. Every year, the Indian Army opens applications for both the entries and thousands of candidates apply for it. A select few make it through and appear for the SSB interview to become officers in the Indian Army. But how are the two entries different? We tell you the details.
SSC Tech vs TGC: Basic Meaning
To start off, SSC Tech stands for Short Service Commission (Technical) whereas, TGC stands for Technical Graduate Course. Both these entries are exclusively open to engineering graduates from recognized universities. The applications open twice every year and interested candidates can apply online via Join Indian Army, the official website of the organization.
These candidates are then shortlisted based on a cut-off percentage for each branch and are issued call-up letters for their SSB interview. Those who qualify the interview, medicals, and merit join the training academy and are commissioned as Lieutenants in the Indian Army.
SSC Tech vs TGC: Differences
While both the entries sound similar on the surface, there are some innate differences between them. You may go through these and make a choice for yourself:
Nature of commission
The first difference between the two entries is the nature of commission. SSC Tech entry offers short service commission for 10 years, which can be extended by 4 years. The TGC entry, however, offers permanent commission and officers can serve till 60 years of age in the Indian Army and are also eligible for pension.
Training academy and period
When it comes to SSC tech vs TGC, you cannot miss out on the training academy. This is where civilians become military leaders. All SSC tech entry candidates undergo pre-commission training at Officers Training Academy, Gaya for 49 weeks. The TGC candidates, on the other hand, train at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun for a year.

Eligibility of women
Women engineering graduates are only eligible to sit for the SSC Tech entry to become officers. As of 2026, they are not eligible for a permanent commission through the TGC entry.
Merit
The debate around merit finds its place in SSC Tech vs TGC too. If a candidate gets merit out from TGC entry, they still find a place in OTA Gaya, and undergo training there. However, this is not allowed for SSC Tech candidates. Being merit out means reappearing for SSB. Please note that generally, no one gets merit out in the technical entries.
Cut-off marks
The cut-off marks for the different branches in SSC Tech are comparatively lower as compared to TGC entry. Therefore, a lot of candidates get shortlisted for the former and have several branch-specific vacancies as well.
SSC Tech vs TGC: Which Is Best For You?
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to be followed here. Both entries are good in their own way and you can choose whichever entry appeals the most to you. SSC Tech entry offers flexibility of career later, whereas TGC gives you the chance to live a life less ordinary till you retire. The choice, hence, is on where you see yourself in the coming years. However, you must apply for both entries, if eligible.
