Recently, the elite organization’s Corps of Signals achieved the Mt. Mentok Kangri summit in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh. This comes days after its summit of Mount Kiagar Ri. What is Mt Mentok Kangri?
India has a range of stunning landscapes that make it truly incredible. One such landscape is Mt Mentok Kangri in the Changthang region of the UT of Ladakh. This is a 6,250 metre-high snow-clad mountain peak known for one of the most difficult and physically exhausting climbs in the country. You might wonder what makes it so difficult. Here are the challenges that any mountaineer would face during the Mt. Mentok Kangri summit:
- Freezing temperatures
- High altitude
- Less oxygen due to the immense height
- Scree and snow slopes that require crampon use and basic endurance

Reason for Recent Summits
We all know that the Indian Army does not do anything without a reason. The organization believes in setting a clear goal for itself and achieving the same with joint effort and planning. So, what could the reason behind these summits be?
The Mt Mentok Kangri summit, which is the second one in a month, is a part of the Indian Army’s “Dreams of Valour – Three Peaks, One Mission, Infinite Resolve” initiative. The aim of this initiative is to continue the rich mountaineering tradition of the Indian Army Corps of Signals, while also preparing the next generation of mountaineers for the organization.
Interestingly, this Mountaineering Expedition 2026 was flagged off by the Signals Officer-in-Chief Lieutenant General Vivek Dogra, SM, who is also the Colonel Commandant of the same, and includes summitting three peaks in total, namely:
- Mt Kiagar Ri (6,100 metres)
- Mt Mentok Kangri (6,260 metres)
- Mt Chamser Kangri (6,622 metres)
The altitude of the succeeding summit increases steadily in this expedition, making it special, and calling for endurance on the part of the mountaineers.
Mt Mentok Kangri Summit
A 20-member team of the Indian Army Corps of Signals summited the peak around the 24th of August this year. The Indian Army made the information of the Mt Mentok Kangri summit public through its official social media handles and press releases such as @IA_SportsAdvntr on X. Please know that this was not an easy mission, and the Corps of Signals troops made it appear effortless despite the same.
The trained team of mountaineers put up an extraordinary display of patience, technological expertise, and a strong resolve through the Mt Mentok Kangri summit. It is a testament of what it takes to join the Indian Armed Forces and conquer the fiercest of obstacles, whether living or otherwise.
However, this is not the end of the expedition. The next and last stage of this initiative is conquering the Mt. Chamser Kangri. This has a height of about 6,622 metres. Its summit will mark the completion of the three-peak initiative and inspire many across the country.
