Each military academy divides its cadets into smaller groups to instill miltary functioning in them. These can be battalions, companies or squadrons, and NDA is no different. Today, we decode all NDA squadrons for aspirants who aspire to join the premier academy.

National Defence Academy (NDA)

The NDA is a pre-commissioning training academy at Khadakwasla, Pune, where young cadets of the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy train together. It came up in 1949 and lives by its motto of Seva Parmo Dharma. Owing to the numerous cadets it houses, the NDA spans over an area of about 7,015 acres.

You can join NDA by clearing the National Defence Academy Examination (UPSC NDA), and the SSB interview. All those who make it through the medicals and final merit train for three years at NDA, and one year at their respective training academies, namely,

Why Do NDA Squadrons Exist?

The NDA squadrons exist for a range of reasons, and not show. Let us understand the reasons briefly:

  • Instilling military functioning: Once you become commissioned officers in your respective service, you will be serving under specific regiments or squadrons. All military academies build that into you through this division.
  • Administrative efficiency: Managing over a thousand candidates can be a huge task, hence, NDA squadrons make the task easy for the administration.
  • Fueling team spirit: Inter-squadron competitions such as X-country involve squadrons competing against each other for the title. Without NDA squadrons this will be monotonous.
  • Developing leadership in cadets: Eligible cadets become appointments and are responsible for their squadron. This develops leadership from a young age.

What are the NDA Squadrons?

Once cadets report to the National Defence Academy, they are allocated their battalions and squadrons. There are five battalions and eighteen NDA squadrons in the academy.

Each squadron comprises 100 to 110 cadets from all courses. Initially, there were only 15 NDA squadrons, however, with its growing strength, the academy raised three more squadrons in 2012.

Flags of NDA Squadrons

Each battalion and squadron in NDA also has a flag for itself, which binds all cadets together with pride and allegiance. The battalion flag is monochrome, whereas the squadron flag divides itself into two parts diagnolly:

  • Upper half depicts the battalion colour
  • Lower half depicts the squadron colour

Here is a list of all the battalion and squadron flags of NDA:

The NDA squadrons impart key military lessons and ethos to each cadet through rigorous training, academics, and shared stories that transform these young minds into future officers. Hence, the National Defence Academy is often dubbed as the cradle of military leadership in India.
