SSB vs AFSB: A Candidate’s Experience Beyond Tests

If you are a defence aspirant, you may have come across the SSB vs AFSB debate. While both are meant for officers’ selection, there are certain differences that can only be experienced. In this blog, we share a candidate’s firsthand experience beyond testing after attending the SSB and AFSB.

SSB vs AFSB: The Basic Difference

Services Selection Board (SSB) is the selection board for candidates aspiring to join the Indian Army as officers. Its Indian Air Force counterpart is called the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB). In simple terms, both the boards are designed to identify future officers but for different services.

Is There a Difference in Assessment Procedure?

Many candidates wonder if the assessment procedure varies across boards. It is important to understand that there are no changes in the assessment at all.

Whether you attend an SSB interview or an AFSB one, you will be subjected to the psychology test battery, group tasks, and personal interview. The final recommendation will also depend on the 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs).

However, in AFSB interviews, the psychology test battery occurs on the screening day and a few branch-specific candidates undergo the CPSS after recommendation. Other than these, everything remains roughly the same.

The real differences begin once you experience the boards beyond the daily assessments.

SSB vs AFSB: Candidates undergoing screening.

SSB vs AFSB: First Impressions

The screening day marks the first step into the selection centre. The SSB looks like a miniature military station with olive green buses ferrying candidates for the testing, and screened in candidates from the previous day rushing to the mess, while the tanks and statues grab your attention. The vibe is energetic as if the centre has come to life.

The AFSB environment is quieter with only one batch being assessed at a time. The beeps of the scanners and blue and white walls make the vibe mechanical but the fighter jets on display definitely turn heads. Overall, the focus is restricted to testing here.

Facilities

When we talk about SSB vs AFSB, a striking feature to compare is the range of facilities available. One thing that particularly stands out in the SSBs is the basic amenities for candidates:
1. Unit run canteen
2. Gymnasium
3. Wet canteen
4. A temple (Sarv Dharm Sthal)

These facilities make Army boards feel like proper military cantonments and provide a glimpse of military life to the candidates.

However, AFSBs offer limited facilities. Candidates can access the candidates’ mess, sports equipment, and anteroom but other areas are out of bounds for them. This may also be because the duration of stay at AFSB is five days, while SSB also accommodates medical candidates.

Accommodation

Since candidates stay inside the premises for five days, accommodation becomes an everyday talk. Interestingly, AFSB takes the lead in it. The dormitories at AFSB are more modern with comfortable bedding, mosquito nets, and air conditioners. Each dormitory has only 8-10 candidates in it, depending on the size of the GTO group.

To be sure, accommodation in SSB centres is adequate and functional but it is more like the army barracks. The candidate lines are more polished in AFSBs.

Friendships

If you’re someone who enjoys human interaction, you will like SSBs more. Army boards host a large number of candidates, with a new batch reporting every other day. This makes the interactions dynamic. Everyone has a story to share, medical candidates have tips, and friendships sprout naturally.

At the same time, AFSBs host one batch per week which makes interactions more personal. Candidates get to know more about each other, and learn new things like sports or riding a bicycle since the premises are not crowded.

SSB vs AFSB: Which One is Better?

To be honest, neither boards is better or worse. Each reflects the work environment and culture of the service. The Indian Army functions in close-knit teams in strenuous environments whereas the Indian Air Force is more technology and precision-driven.

Before a candidate joins the service of their choice and wears the uniform, these centres provide a glimpse into what they can expect as officers. Whether they live a life less ordinary or touch the sky with glory, the service remains directed towards the nation.

Final Thoughts

The assessment pattern in SSB and AFSB remains the same throughout as the assessors are looking for OLQs. However, the schedule may change based on the organisation. If you are someone who has attended both, SSB and AFSB, you may have realised that what remains later isn’t the SSB vs AFSB comparison but the memories of the mess, dormitory, and inside jokes.
