A Game-changer : Boeing Apache And Chinook To Join Indian Defence

The first batch of US-built heavy-lift Chinook helicopters and Apache attack helicopters will be delivered to the Indian armed forces in March, moving India’s military capacity and capability to the next level. Here is some must know information about the deal.

 

  • The Apache and chinook helicopters are manufactured by US defence contractor Boeing.

 

  • Boeing has also signed a framework agreement with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) under "make in India" for manufacturing unmanned aerial vehicles(drones).

  • The first of the Chinook helicopters are already bound for Mundra port in Gujarat.

 

  • In the deal, India has spent $3 billion on 15 Chinook and 22 Apache attack helicopters.

  • The Apaches will provide local army commanders quick combat power at critical moments anywhere in the battlefield.

 

  • And the Chinook helicopters will be stationed at Chandigarh air base, which supplies to the critical Siachen and Eastern Ladakh sectors.

 

  • It is important to note that induction of these two platforms will be a gamechanger for the Indian military which still relies on Russian Mi-17 medium lift helicopters.

  • The AH-64 Apache is an American twin-turboshaft attack helicopter with a tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement and a tandem cockpit for a crew of two.

  • The CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engined, tandem rotor, heavy-lift helicopter.
  • Top speed: 315 km/h
  • Primary users

                   United States Army

                   Japan Ground Self-Defense Force

                   Royal Netherlands Air Force
