What is a Forward Operating Base?
While most of us have heard the term once in our lives, not many of us know what it is, and how it functions. For your understanding, a forward operating base is a military facility which is constructed quite close to an operational area to support the forces deployed there. Please know that this is not a permanent establishment but one that changes as per requirement.
Generally, a forward operating base can provide a range of amenities which are required by the troops functioning in that remote area. These include:
- Accommodation of troops
- Communication system
- Logistics and regular supplies like ration and equipment
- Medical support
- Maintenance of equipment
- Surveillance, command and coordination
- Mobility support through vehicles
There is no clear definition of the size of a forward operating base, as it depends on the sectoral requirements and other technicalities.
Need For Forward Operating Base
We started off with the idea that the Indian Army has to operate in diverse environments, especially the northern sector bordering China and Pakistan. These are areas where even internet connectivity is a bliss, hence, a forward operating base becomes essential.
The mountainous terrain that surrounds the northern sector offers several challenges in the form of extreme temperatures, steep slopes, limited road connectivity, reduced oxygen supply, and restricted movement among others. This means that remaining distant from permanent bases puts the forces at a disadvantage.
Therefore, a forward operating base is developed with most of the facilities that a permanent base may have. It ensures that the troops are provided with everything that facilitates readiness is available without having to rely on what is distant. But, is this the same as a forward post?
Forward Operating Base vs Forward Post
Many people also use the terms forward operating base and forward post as synonyms. However, they are not the same. We tell you how:
A forward operating base is like a deployment of facilities which provides for essentials from ration to equipment maintenance in a forward area. A forward post, on the other hand, is a position that troops occupy close to the border for intelligence gathering, surveillance, or reconnaissance.
While both are not permanent, a forward post ensures presence for a specific purpose, and does not comprise facilities like accommodation, communication, medical support, et cetera which a forward operating base may have.
The Indian Air Force
Air support is something that changes the course of wars and conflicts due to its overarching capabilities. Hence, whenever we speak about a forward operating base, we must not forget the role of the Indian Air Force in it.
The IAF uses its aircraft such as the C-130J Super Hercules, An-32 and C-17 Globemaster III to provide logistics and support through airborne operations. Similarly, it also operates Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) for quick deployment in case of a conflict. Some other roles that it undertakes include:
- Projection of power and deterrence
- Close air support
- Airlifting of troops
- Rapid deployment
- Ensuring logistical support
