The passing out parade or POP is one of the most-awaited moments of a cadet’s life. A remarkable sight at such occasions is a white horse at IMA POP, which catches everyone’s attention. Ever wondered why it exists? Today, we tell you the story behind it.
What is IMA POP?
The IMA POP is an event when all officer cadets of that specific course become commissioned officers in the Indian Army. This day comes after months of training and includes the following events:
- Parade of all passing out officer cadets
- Performances by first or second termers displaying glimpses of training
- Pipping by parents to reveal the stars on cadets’ shoulders
- Oath of allegiance at the Khetarpal Auditorium
Hence, it remains a cherished moment in the lives of OCs and their loved ones.
White Horse at IMA POP
Right before the passing out cadets enter the Chetwode building’s drill square, an officer mounted on a horse arrives at the location. He gives commands and oversees the parade. The officer is the Adjutant of the academy accompanied by the horse at IMA POP that we are speaking of.
This robust animal is a trained soldier as well. It is referred to as ‘a charger’ and it undergoes training before the actual IMA POP just like other cadets. It learns composure during the loud sounds of the military band, fly past by aircraft, and applause from the families and friends of the cadets.
Why is There a White Horse at IMA POP?
Now, we come to the main question about the existence of a white horse at IMA POP. The present-day spectacle finds its roots in an impromptu action in the past.
Before IMA came up in Dehradun, all eligible cadets trained at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England. It was the premier training institute for officers of the British Army.
Once its then Adjutant, Major Frederick “Boy” Browning was wearing his decorated ceremonial uniform while it was raining heavily. Hence, to protect it from the rain, he rode on a horseback into the academy in Sandhurst. This became a military tradition later and was adopted in 1932, when the Indian Military Academy was established. Today, the Adjutant of the academy leads all cadets above a white horse at IMA POP.
