Soni Bisht: From Loss to Legacy
Just a month after her wedding, Soni Bisht faced a devastating tragedy when she lost her husband, Sepoy Neeraj Singh Bhandari of the 18 Kumaon Regiment, in an accident. Her world was shattered on January 6, 2023. Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, she chose to transform her grief into a purpose—fulfilling her late husband’s dream by donning the Indian Army uniform.
As the daughter of retired Subedar Kundan Singh of the Brigade of Guards Battalion, Soni was familiar with the life of a soldier. It was the officers of the Kumaon Regiment who introduced her to the Veer Nari entry, a special opportunity for war widows to serve in the armed forces. Encouraged by her father, she embraced the challenge, fought through the rigorous selection process, and emerged victorious. On the proud day of her passing out parade at OTA Chennai, she marched forward—not as a widow, but as a warrior, ready to serve her nation. Commissioned into the Army Ordnance Corps, Soni Bisht embodies strength, courage, and an unbreakable spirit.
Ved Vijay Neog: From Coffee Cups to the Olive Greens
Another inspiring story is that of Ved Vijay Neog from Jorhat, Assam, whose path to the Indian Army was anything but conventional. Life threw multiple obstacles his way, but he never let adversity define him. Originally recommended for the Indian Military Academy (IMA) after graduation, he had to withdraw due to family hardships. Undeterred, he moved to Delhi, juggling jobs to make ends meet—working as a barista by day and delivering food by night. Despite his struggles, his dream of wearing the uniform never faded.
His passion for photography led him to travel across India, working with major brands as a travel photographer. Yet, deep inside, his heart remained set on serving the nation. Determined to achieve his goal, he appeared for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam, cleared it, and secured his place at OTA Chennai. After years of perseverance and dedication, he finally earned his commission into the Indian Army, proving that dreams do come true with unwavering determination.
