NAVAL BASES AT ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR -ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
"May the lord of the water be auspicious unto us". Indian navy is 7th largest navy in the world with almost 67,228 personnel
divided into 3 commands.In this article we will be particularly talking about the naval bases in Andaman and Nicobar islands.
With the help of these naval bases we are able to expand the footprint in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.
Andaman and Nicobar island is the first and only Tri-service theatre commmand of Indian Armed Forces at Port Blair.
INS UTKROSH
INS Utkrosh is an Indian naval air station under the joint-services Andaman and Nicobar Command of the Indian Armed Forces.
It is located near naval base INS Jarawa, on Port Blair in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.It shares air side facilities
with Veer Savarkar International Airport which handles civilian traffic. It was initially commissioned as INS Jarawa II.
On 11 May 1985, the air station was formally commissioned as INS Utkrosh by then Defence Minister of India,
P. V. Narasimha Rao, making it the first naval air station in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Its location makes it an important
strategic station for protecting India's maritime interests in the Bay of Bengal.
Naval Air Squadrons based at INS Utkrosh include:
INAS 318, a reconnaissance squadron operating Dornier Do 228 aircraft
INAS 321, operating HAL Chetak helicopters
INS BAAZ
INS Baaz is an Indian naval air station under the joint-services Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) of the Indian Armed Forces.
It is located near Campbell Bay, on Great Nicobar island in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.It is the southernmost air
station of the Indian Armed Forces.It overlooks the Strait of Malacca as well as the Six Degree channel between
Great Nicobar and the Indonesian island of Sumatra.INS Baaz was commissioned by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral
Nirmal Kumar Verma on July 31, 2012. It is the first air station in the Nicobar Islands, situated on the Great Nicobar
island in the remotest and southernmost part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and lies very close to the Six Degree
channel, a vital choke point.This Naval air station provides requisite logistic, communication and administrative
support for various aircraft undertaking surveillance, patrolling missions and maritime air operations. The strategically
located INS Baaz will enable India to extend its reach in the eastern Indian Ocean region.INS Baaz initially used as
a base for the Indian Navy's Dornier Do 228 reconnaissance aircraft. It can also operate the Indian Air Force's C-130J
Super Hercules transport aircraft.
INS KOHASSA
Naval Air Station (NAS) Shibpur has been commissioned as INS Kohassa by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lamba. It is a step forward in enhancing the operational
capability of Andaman and Nicobar Command. INS Kohassa will be India's fourth air base and third naval air facility in the region that overlooks key sea
lanes of communication and strategic points with more than 60,000 commercial vessels passing through each year.INS Kohassa
named after White-Bellied Sea Eagle, which is a large bird of prey endemic to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.INS Kohassa
will also function as a base for joint operation of both military and civil aircraft in keeping with the UDAN scheme of
the government.The airbase will be able to handle Helicopter and Dornier Aircraft at present and after expansion the
facility would enable the operation of bigger civil and defence aircraft.
