How A Cadet Is Trained At Indian Naval Academy Ezhimala. The duration of training at INA is four years for INAC cadets whereas its 22 weeks for NOC (Regular) and 44 weeks for NOC (Extended). On completion, trainees would be required to proceed for downstream specialised training, in respective branches, at various training establishments/ ships of the Indian Navy.

A Naval officer is expected to be physically fit and mentally alert at all times and the importance of outdoor training in developing this trait cannot be over emphasised. All candidates are advised to be physically active when reporting to the Academy. This would enable you to smoothly blend into the out door activities (ODT) activities planned. The following activities would be undertaken as a part of the ODT at Indian Naval Academy :

Physical Training (PT) : PT sessions would be conducted in the morning and coaching/ mentoring for sports/ games in the afternoons. Graduating from simple exercises, trainees would be conditioned for advanced exercises as the term progresses. Trainees would be required to pass the PT tests within three attempts.

Trainees failing in PT tests would not be allowed to be a part of the Passing Out Parade and would therefore not be allowed to bring their parents/ gaurdians for the parade. Failure to clear mandatory PT tests within 15 days on completion of POP would entail relegation (repetition of the term) of the trainee.

Swimming : Swimming is compulsory and all trainees are required to pass the basic swimming test before the end of the second semester, failing which the trainee may be relegated. The basic swimming test consists of swimming 50 m (any stroke) followed by floating for three minutes while wearing a full sleeve shirt and a pair of trousers. The trainees are also required to clear advanced swimming tests during the course of the training, details of which would be intimated to the trainee on arrival. Subsequently, the 10 m jump and increased distance of swimming proficiency to 1500 mtrs for INAC course will be ensured by the Academy.

Watermanship Training (WST) : Theoretical as well as practical instructions are imparted in watermanship. Sufficient practical classes are conducted, so as to enable the trainee to understand the parts of a boat, rig the sails of a boat and sail the boats in water. Watermanship activities include:-

(i) Pulling/sailing training in 27 feet service whaler boat (rowing and sailing boat).

(ii) Sailing (yachting) in Enterprise Class dinghy (sailboat).

(iii) Power boat handling.

Drill and Small Arms Training : Instructions in squad drill, rifle and sword drill would be imparted to trainees. Trainees would also be taught to handle and fire a variety of small arms.

Camps : During the course, trainees would be required to run an outdoor camp of a duration of four days. During the camp, the trainee would be acquainted with aspects of map reading, land fighting and survival in hostile terrain/ condition.

Sports and Games : Sports and games would be conducted to develop trainees’ interest and proficiency in outdoor games as also sportsmanship. To this end, state of the art facilities exists for football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, squash, cricket, swimming and all water sports at the Indian Naval Academy.
