Group Discussion SSB. What is a group discussion?

Group Discussion SSB is a process wherein two or more people exchange information or ideas in a face-to-face situation. It is basically a situation test wherein a sample of a candidate’s group worthiness and potential comes out quite explicitly.

Group discussion is one of the major tests in SSB and it is also an opportunity for the candidate to make a good impression on GTO. Let us consider some do’s and don’ts which will be beneficial for you to gain an edge over other candidates and eventually you will put a positive impact on group task officer.

Do’s and Don’ts of a group discussion:

1. Maintain a straight and confident posture throughout the discussion.

2. Take lead: Grab the opportunity to open the discussion as it leaves a good impression on the evaluating officer.

3. Remember, as it is a group discussion you’re being judged on a group level, so you need to be not only vocal but receptive as well.

4. Be receptive: Make sure while you’re listening to other’s point of views, they’re looking at you, this is another way of getting acknowledged by the evaluator.

5. Be assertive yet humble. Stick to your points firmly but respect others opinions too.

6. Make an eye contact with all the group members, this will create more room for conversation from your end.

7. Be crisp and to the point. Try adding more and more point to the discussion.

8. Think well before you speak. You are being heard and judged upon.

9. Do not repeat the same point again and again.

10. Healthy group discussion: The discussion should be a healthy one, so in order to put across your thoughts, do not fight or argue with other group members.

1. Cultivate a habit of not just reading a newspaper but also of developing your views and opinions on important topics.

2. Group discussions are not about just giving information, but about your views on the given topic.

Just in case, the topic is not known by you, do not panic. Listen to others for a while, quickly develop your views on those given facts and put forth your views.
